Crossing Brooklyn Ferry

I felt that "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" is a poem about one's transition through life. Whitman speaks on his past experiences when he says "Just as any of you is one of a living crowd, I was one of a crowd". He is showing the reader that he is human, and that he has done some of the same things as the reader. He also says " What is it then between us?, What is the count of the scores or hundreds of years between us?". These lines show that this lesson in life is timeless, and that everyone is learning. Whitman is trying to give you a guide and at the same time encouragement through life. In lines 70-77, he warns you of what life has to offer. He lists most of the negatives. In line 120, he says" Appearances, now or henceforth, indicate what you are. He is saying that people are going to judge you by how you look. I believe that Crossing Brooklyn Ferry is a helpful, and encouraging guide through life for the reader.
